Everybody knows the news can be charitably described as inaccurate.

Sure, Microsoft Marketing Department says it was trained on public code. The PM probably told them it was.

Was it actually trained on public code only?

I really don't think that's realistic. They would get sued by every single one of their major customers for leaking confidential information.

Because it would be easy to show if there was a counterexample.
