Which would be better? Why? Are you thinking of push notifications, or is it something else?

About push notifications, UnifiedPush is quickly becoming an interesting alternative: https://unifiedpush.org/

Google's services are a major performance and battery hog. Microg impact is much smaller, but obviously having nothing is still better.
