I rolled my eyes and was ready to diss this, but I thought I would take a look and I was not disappointed. If you enjoy a good tech teardown this is worth the read even if you are not interested in the subject matter. Doubly so if you are though!

Great teardown. Just hack in a switch already.

Second thought is: I can do better than this with an aquarium pump minus its butterfly valve. Runs on AC, nonstop for years.

I'd be interested to see a BOM cost breakdown of one of these compared to one of the full-featured toys you mentioned...
