Ask HN: How to get a part-time tech job?

I would really like to work less than 5 days a week for a bit, but I couldn't really find any part-time tech jobs out there (even before the COVID pandemic).

Not all roles suit part-time - I doubt it makes sense for any team to have a software engineer who shows up only 2 or 3 days a week.

So what roles are most likely to be able to land a part-time gig?

How to go about finding them?

Should you apply to full time job listings for roles that could suit a part-time working, get on a call with the recruiters and see how they react when you mention part-time?

Curious why part time?

If you have a reason such as health or child/elder care I would think explaining that to any hiring manager shouldn’t rule you out from a position just because you are up front about your situation. Is this more a lifestyle choice to have as much fee time as you can to travel etc and make just enough money to get by? Why not a full time job and take vacations? Some companies give unlimited vacation...ok they say they do but really if you work on a project and get it complete and need to decompress for n weeks and let your manager know and work it out ahead of time that should be entirely possible! So I’d say barring any reasons above or others not mentioned where part time work is a necessity, I would say go for the full time work.

The best roles for working when you want are the gig economy jobs like Uber and Lyft. You can always check out roberthalf.com and other head hunters for jobs
