Most likely if the iOS device is new enough to have iOS14 and Intercom support, you can sell it for more than $99 and get the Homepod =)

We have a first-gen iPhone SE that runs iOS 14 fine but probably wouldn't fetch more than $99+tax, especially when the hassle factor is accounted for. Also, it's nice to have a backup phone around the house, in case something happens to one of our primary phones.

I just asked Siri on my iPad to “tell everyone to go to bed” and it told me you can only intercom from one HomePod to another.

Most likely it'll require a point release for iOS to bring the features to other devices.

...but the Homepod Mini will be limited availability like the original Homepod, so I won't be getting it anyway.
