It might happen though. Look how Git made a neat change in the CVS domain.

Admittedly, it takes people aware of the issues with the current stack, and the ability to take a different successful approach.

Those behind Wayland were competent about X11, as far as I know. But for some reasons, adoption of Wayland is still scarce.

The user-facing impact of switching to git is that committing is faster and you get much better branching and merging. The user-facing impact of switching to Wayland is that you stop being able to run GUI programs over SSH.

What you're saying is not true at all, X11 forwarding still works because of XWayland.

There is no particular reason. Making big changes is never easy.
