What about packages that isn't provided by your distribution. Or packaged software in your distribution is too old, and you have a reason to use a new version.

But compiling isn't so simple. For example, if it require a dependency that is not in your distribution then it won't be easy to compile.

99% of software is available in rpm or deb. So copy/paste/edit - profit.
