I found I could read this in EMACS with a package called Elpher, but there's a smiley or something I couldn't see.

Maybe the specification should prohibit smilies.

Author of elpher here. If you were running under MacOS you were probably hitting the restriction that GUI Emacs explicitly forbids the display of coloured Unicode characters on that platform.

I was running it on Arch Linux. I may just lack the font.
