Thank the gods it was! I'm still traumatised by the <blink>-tags and dancing banana GIFs of the old days...
I mean, sure - 404 pages with dry "Oops" or "Not found" messages are way more boring, but I really don't miss getting to see GOATSE or TUB GIRL (don't look up either if you're not familiar with it) every other time I click an outdated link...
There's very little that works if it's development is driven by a community as large and diverse (in terms of sometimes opposing interests and goals) as "the public".
