> There is a need for something of a “slow code” movement, one that doesn’t reinvent the wheel every few years. A movement toward more stable and complete libraries, of languages that don’t break backwards compatibility. Of seeing the field as a craft and part of a long lineage of intellectual forebears instead of as a terrain where the masters need to be overthrown for the latest junk to be installed.
A lot of what this article sums up the hobbyist or beginners feeling: everything seems jumbled, complex and disorganized in the world of programming, that goes double for web development. What do you guys think, do you agree? Also, what do you think of the concept of 'craft programming', it made me think of Ruby and the joy of programming (pure Ruby, no Rails). There is something fun, and elegant about programming something very simple, like a tic-tac-toe or hangman games, working out the bugs and kinks. Working from the terminal 'feels' right. I've always like the elegance of simplicity when working on certain programs, and others (the web!) I get a headache...maybe I should just follow my bliss and stick with simple, clean and elegant programs. I wonder if there is more to this. Any thoughts?
