Ask HN: Is it safe to upgrade to macOS yet?

Hi! I am just wondering if, firstly, anyone else's MacBook Pro was destroyed by last year's macOS Sierra or High Sierra updates, and so whether now someone might let me know the coast is, or is not, clear to update my other MBP, from El Capitan.

(Also, if anyone has any insights as to why my other MBP's keyboard might've stopped responding, and perhaps too how I might trivially bring it back to life. I'd be able to hand it down to a family member, and very grateful of your efforts.)
