I find standup useful exactly because it's synchronous. It's like a checkpoint, and keeps the project running smoothly, with everyone's goals aligned, nobody blocked, etc.

(We work in teams of 4-6 and standup is never more than 10 minutes. I've also had the "30-minute standup" which not really a standup...)
