Ask HN: Can anyone suggest the Designing software related book?

Hi All,

I interviewed and interviewer asked me about the designing elevator system. I do not come up with extendible design. I know about design patterns at some extent. But I really want to know when to take design decisions. Can any one suggest good book where we design these type of scenarios with explanation about design choices made?
