You can actually drop the Z these days in a lot of cases; tar will detect the compression algorithm.

I occasionally log into older GNU, or non-OSX BSD systems where tar can't detect the compression automatically. [1]

[1] this isn't true, I just enjoy saying 'extract Ze Files' in a silly accent
