We live in an "austerity-era" where government budgets continually expand. Apparently a mere reduction in the rate of growth qualifies as austerity these days.

It's more about spending relative to GDP.

And when you look at income relative to GPD, the US is only just now returning to it's historical average in eighties and nineties.
